COVID Closure - April 29, 2020 update

posted Apr 30, 2020, 7:54 AM by Christine Pépin

Dear GUA Families,

Please note that like this message, moving forward, we will be using our Emergency messenger system to ensure that all of our families are receiving correspondence from the school and the school Board.

On Sunday, Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced that all publicly-funded schools, including all Ottawa Catholic schools, would remain closed until at least May 31, 2020. The extension is based on expert advice from the Chief Medical Officer of Health and health officials on the COVID-19 Command Table.  The School Board has created an information site that will give you Updates, Learning & Well-Being Resources as well as a FAQ Section. Although we will be continuing Distance Learning for longer than had originally been anticipated and even though we may not all be in the same building, the learning does continue.

Staff have been sharing work online and adhering to the Ministry of Education mandate of providing five hours of work per week for students.  As we make our way through Week Four of Phase Two Distance Learning, we hope your child is starting to develop a routine or schedule to support their learning at home. We know that there are many factors at play at this time and many of you are continuing to deal with issues unrelated to school, including working from home, childcare pressures, potential job loss, as well as financial and health concerns.  We also understand that sharing a device in the home can be challenging and ask that students complete work to the best of their ability within the individual constraints that they may face during any given week.   Distance learning is meant to be flexible and encourages students to learn when they can, where they can and at any point within the day/week to allow for maximum flexibility for families to schedule what works best for them.

We pray that all families remain healthy and safe as this is the number one priority and we want to reassure you that no student grades or promotion will be negatively affected by the distance learning situation we have found ourselves in.  Educators are here during the week, to provide feedback, answer questions and to support students. Please continue to communicate with your child’s educators as needs or questions arise.

We are grateful to all individual families, as well as our School Council, who have donated generously to food banks, our Gator Aid fund, and to the Catholic Education Foundation to help support families in need.  If you are healthy and able, please know that the Canadian Blood Services is also in need of donations. Thank you.

We all recognize the need for patience as we navigate this journey together.  We would like to thank all of the staff, parents and students for working together to make a difference in their education.  We are so proud of our community for its efforts, supportive nature and collaborative spirit. One thing for certain, we will make it through this together!

Please continue to practice social distancing as instructed by Ottawa Public Health.  We all hope that the school will be open in the near future.

With blessings from,

Your Leadership Team, Karen Wilson, Christine Pepin, and the GUA Staff
